14 people were killed by Typhoon Pepeng

typhoon pepengAccording to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), fourteen people died from floods, landslides and other typhoon-related incidents in the Cordillera Autonomous Region and Bicol as typhoon Pepeng  (with international name “Parma”) lashed through these regions last Saturday.

Twelve of the fatalities were caused by landslides in Barangay Beckel in La Trinidad and Barangay Ampucao in Itogon town, all in Benguet province – that were triggered by heavy rains.

The other two fatalities were from Naga and Baao in Camarines Norte, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

No deaths were reported in the Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley. The relatively low toll of lives was attributed to preemptive evacuation of residents.

Some evacuees are now staying with relatives and in 171 designated evacuation centers.
